Због свог високог ума, ревности верске и часноречивости назван другим Златоустом. У време патријарха Полиевкта и цара Константина Порфирогенита дође у Цариград руска кнегиња Олга, и ту се крсти 957. године. Патријарх ју је крстио, а цар јој био кум. Пророчки јој рекне свети Полиевкт: „Благословена си ти међу женама руским, јер си заволела светлост и одбацила таму, благосиљаће те синови руски до последњег колена”. Из простих монаха Полиевкт је био узет за патријарха 946. године и остао је на престолу патријаршијском до своје смрти 970. године.
