На островот Хиос оваа светителка ужива огромна почит. Во нејзината црква постојано се случуваат чуда. Но нејзиното житие е непознато. Според Преданието Маркела била необично побожна девојка, која рано останала без мајка. Нејзиниот незнабожен и звероподобен татко сакал да живее со ќерката како со жена. Маркела побегнала од татко ѝ. Но овој, разјарен како вистински ѕвер, ја стигнал и ја исекол на парчиња. Во близина на нејзиниот храм се наоѓаат некои камења коишто овде-онде биваат како со крв попрскани. Тие камења народот ги зема, ги носи в црква, ѝ се моли на Света Маркела, па ги полага врз болни, и од тоа оздравуваат.
