Ученик на Св. Григориј Декаполит. Во времето на иконоборната ерес царот Лав Ерменин го подложи Св. Јован на маки заедно со неговиот учител Григориј и со Св. Јосиф Песнописец. Кога Св. Григориј го заврши својот земен живот, Јован стана игумен на Декаполитовиот манастир во Цариград. Штом стана игумен, заради Царството Божјо тој го удвои својот подвиг. Се упокои мирно околу 820 година. По смртта Св. Јосиф го погреба близу до гробот на неговиот учител Св. Григориј.
