Беше монах на Студитскиот манастир. Пострада за иконите од царот Лав Ерменин. Кога великиот Теодор Студит беше во ропство, Јаков го фрлија во големи маки за да се одрече од иконопочитувањето. Но тој остана истраен и верен на Православието докрај. Избиен и измачен го вратија назад во манастирот, а тогаш злобниот цар најде зол крај на својот живот. Преподобен Јаков умре во манастирот од тешките повреди стекнати при страдањето.
