Син на деспотите Ѓурѓе и Јерина. Со својата сестра Мара извесно време живееше на дворецот на султанот Мурат II. Во Едрене го ослепија заедно со неговиот брат Гргур. Деспотската власт над Србија ја прими во 1458 година. Наскоро мораше да се засолни од својата земја во Албанија, каде што се ожени со Ангелина, ќерка на Скендербег. Слеп и несреќен, но постојано предаден на Бога, се упокои во 1468 година во Италија. Неговите мошти почиваат во Крушедол, ктиторство на неговиот син Св. Максим.
