Царот Максимијан Херкул нареди дека сите војници мораат да им принесат жртви на идолите. Маркел во тоа време беше војник, а Касијан нотар (писар). Тогаш Маркел како христијанин рече: „Ако војничкиот позив е поврзан со жртвопринесување на идолите, јас не можам да бидам војник.“ Па го симна војничкиот појас и оружјето и ги фрли од себе. Веднаш беше осуден на смрт. Касијан требаше да ја напише смртната пресуда за Маркел, но тој одрече да ја напише. Беа убиени заедно и душите им се преселија во Царството Небесно.
