Овој Собор се состана во 431 година во Ефес, во времето на царот Теодосиј Помладиот. На Соборот присуствуваа двесте отци. Овој Собор го осуди Несториј, Цариградскиот патријарх, заради еретичкото учење за Пресвета Дева Марија и за раѓањето на Господ. Имено, Несториј не сакаше да Ја нарекува Пресветата Дева Богородица, туку Христородица. Со осудата на Несториј Светите отци утврдија Пресветата Дева да се именува Богородица. Освен тоа, ги потврдија одлуките на Првиот и Вториот Вселенски Собор, особено Никејо-Цариградскиот Символ на Верата и заповедаа никој да не смее од овој символ ниту нешто да одзема ниту да додава.
