Прозван Маврон. Врло образован но у исто време и духован муж. Тек у старости при цару Алексију Комнену, постане митрополитом евхаитским. Прослављен нарочито тиме, што су му се јавили свети Василије, Григорије Богослов и Јован Златоуст (в. 30. јануар) и објаснили му, како су они сва тројица подједнако прослављени на небу. После тог виђења утиша се препирка у народу око тога, ко је од та три светитеља већи, а ко мањи. Још је свети Јован саставио познати канон Исусу Сладчајшем, и канон Ангелу Хранитељу, а поред тога оставио је и друге корисне списе. Скончао мирно 1100. године.
