Роден е во Нинива и во младоста се подвизуваше во Мар-Матејскиот манастир близу Нинива. Кога се прочу со светоста на животот и со многубројните чуда, го избраа за епископ Нинивски и го принудија на тој чин. Но после пет месеци тој го остави епископството и тајно се оддалечи во оддалечениот манастир Раббан-Шабур. Состави многубројни дела, од кои до нас дојдоа околу сто беседи за духовниот живот и подвижништвото, пишувани главно од сопствен опит. Неспоредлив психолог и раководител во духовниот живот. Дури и светителите како Св. Симеон Дивногорец од него бараа совет. Се упокои во длабока старост на крајот од 7 век.
