Роден е во Вавилон за време на робувањето на Израилот од племето Левиево. Пророкуваше 470 години пред Христа. Како млад го посети Ерусалим. Ги поттикнуваше Зоровавел и свештеникот Исус да го обноват храмот Господов пророкувајќи му на тој храм поголема слава од поранешниот храм Соломонов. „Славата на овој последен храм ќе биде поголема отколку на поранешниот, вели Господ над војските“ (Агеј 2, 9). Зашто во новиот храм ќе се јави Господ Спасителот. Овој пророк доживеа да види еден изграден дел од храмот, кое го изврши Зоровавел. Се упокои на старост.
