Наречен Ксантопулос според келијата Ксантопула на Атонската Гора, каде што тој се подвизуваше долго време со својот соподвижник Игнатиј. Заедно со Игнатиј во сто глави го опишаа сопствениот опит во безмолвниот живот. Ова дело зазема мошне видно место во подвижничката книжевност. Калист беше под големо влијание на својот учител Св. Григориј Синајски, чиешто житие го напиша тој. Како патријарх Цариградски Св. Калист еднаш појде во Србија и на тоа патување се разболе и умре (како што по патот, на Света Гора, му прорече Св. Максим Капсокаливит).
