Ο Άγιος Σεβήρος ήταν από την Σίδη της Παμφυλίας, γιος του Θρακιώτη Πετρωνίου και της Μυγδονίας. Αυτός λοιπόν, όταν ήλθε στη Φιλιππούπολη και είδε τους Τριανταεπτά Αγίους Μάρτυρες (βλέπε 20 Αυγούστου) να αγωνίζονται γενναία για τον Χριστό, με θάρρος ομολόγησε και αυτός τον ένα και αληθινό Θεό. Αμέσως τότε ξέσχισαν τις σάρκες του με σιδερένια πυρακτωμένα νύχια, κατόπιν τον πριόνισαν, έπειτα του φόρεσαν σιδερένια πυρακτωμένη ζώνη και στο τέλος τον αποκεφάλισαν.
