Ο αθλητής αυτός της χριστιανικής πίστης, έζησε στα χρόνια των εικονομάχων. Η ευσέβεια και οι υπόλοιπες αρετές του, τον έφεραν στον επισκοπικό θρόνο της Απολλωνιάδος, πόλης της Βιθυνίας, που υπαγόταν στη Μητρόπολη Νικομήδειας. Ακριβής γνώστης των Αγίων Γραφών, διδάσκαλος και κήρυκας εύγλωττος και πρακτικότατος, διακρινόταν και για την άκρα αφιλοκέρδεια και τα φιλάνθρωπο έργα του.
