Ο Άγιος Κλήμης καταγόταν από τη Βουλγαρία και έζησε στα χρόνια του βασιλιά Μιχαήλ (842 - 867 μ.Χ.), γιου του βασιλιά Θεοφίλου του εικονομάχου. Από μικρός είχε τη μοναχική κλίση και έτσι κατέφυγε σε μοναστήρι, όπου ασκήτευε στην πνευματική ζωή και μελετούσε συστηματικά την Αγία Γραφή. Για τις ευαγγελικές του αρετές χειροτονήθηκε από τον Ιερό Μεθόδιο επίσκοπος Βουλγαρίας, που μέχρι το τέλος της ζωής του αποστολικά ποίμανε. Απεβίωσε ειρηνικά. Το δε ιερό λείψανο του, κατατέθηκε στη Μονή του Αγίου Παντελεήμονα, που ο ίδιος έκτισε, στην Αχρίδα της Βουλγαρίας.
