Ο Όσιος Πιτυρούν έκανε μαθητής του Μεγάλου Αντωνίου (βλέπε 17 Ιανουαρίου) και πήρε από τις αρετές και τα χαρίσματα εκείνου, η δε εγκράτεια του εικονίζεται κατά τον αυστηρότατο ασκητισμό. Πολλές φορές έμεινε νηστικός εντελώς, χωρίς καθόλου να ζημιωθεί η υγεία του ή να ελαττωθεί η πνευματική αντοχή του και η προθυμία του. Συχνά έλεγαν οι μοναχοί για οράματα, που εμφανίζονταν σ' αυτούς οι δαίμονες. Εκείνος τότε έλεγε: «εγώ φοβάμαι περισσότερα τα δαιμόνια, πού φωλιάζουν την υπερηφάνεια, τη φιλαργυρία, τη φιληδονία και άλλα παρόμοια πάθη. Αυτά είναι τα πιο επικίνδυνα δαιμόνια και πρέπει μεγάλη προσοχή προς αυτά». Ο όσιος Πιτυρούν απεβίωσε ειρηνικά.
