Οι Άγιοι Έρμος (ή Ερμής), Σεραπίων και Πολύαινος ήταν τέκνα της Ρώμης και διακρίνονταν για το ζήλο τους στη διάδοση της πίστης και εναντίον της πολεμικής των ειδωλολατρών. Καταγγέλθηκαν στις αρχές και έμειναν σταθεροί στην ομολογία της πίστης τους. Τότε, μια σειρά από άγρια βασανιστήρια τους περίμεναν. Στην αρχή τους έδειραν αλύπητα και έπειτα τους έριξαν σε μια φυλακή σκοτεινή και δυσώδη. Εκεί τους ταλαιπωρούσαν με πολλές στερήσεις και κακοπάθειες. Αλλά τίποτα δεν κατάφερε να τους κλονίσει. Τότε τους έβγαλαν από κει, και αφού τους έδεσαν σφιχτά με σχοινιά, τους έσυραν οι όχλοι σε ανώμαλο έδαφος, γεμάτο με πολλές και κοφτερές πέτρες. Έτσι οι σάρκες τους κομματιάστηκαν και τα κεφάλια τους γέμισαν από πληγές και αίματα. Οι ψυχές τους όμως ανέγγιχτες, πέταξαν στον Σωτήρα Χριστό για να αναπαυτούν αιώνια κοντά Του.
