Οι Άγιοι Πένητες οι Μάρτυρες, θανατώθηκαν από τον Λικίνιο δια πυρός, επειδή κατέστρεψαν τα είδωλα του ναού. Το ναό αυτό έκτισαν οι Άγιοι Φλώρος και Λαύρος (βλέπε 18 Αυγούστου). Τα χρήματα όμως που τους έδωσε ο βασιλιάς αυτός για την ανέγερση του ναού, οι άγιοι τα έδωσαν στο πλήθος αυτό των φτωχών, οι όποιοι, κατόπιν, με προτροπή των Αγίων Φλώρου και Λούρου, κατέστρεψαν τα είδωλα του ναού και τον μετέτρεψαν, τρόπον τινά, σε χριστιανικό.
