Ο Άγιος Αθηνόδωρος καταγόταν από τη Μεσοποταμία και έζησε την εποχή του αυτοκράτορα Διοκλητιανού (290 μ.Χ.). Ήταν θαυμαστό το ψυχικό σθένος με το οποίο υπέφερε τα φρικτά βασανιστήρια στα οποία υποβλήθηκε λόγω της πίστης του στον Ιησού Χριστό. Έτσι λοιπόν, στην αρχή του έκαψαν τις σάρκες με αναμμένες από ρητίνη λαμπάδες. Έπειτα, του έβαλαν στις μασχάλες σιδερένιες πυρακτωμένες σφαίρες. Και στη συνέχεια τον ξάπλωσαν σε χάλκινο πυρωμένο τάπητα. Η υπομονή και καρτερικότητα που έδειξε, προσέλκυσε στον χριστιανισμό πενήντα ειδωλολάτρες, οι οποίοι παρακολουθούσαν τα μαρτύρια. Έτσι παρέδωσε το πνεύμα του στον Κύριο και στέφθηκε με το στέφανο του Μαρτυρίου.
