Ο Άγιος Άζης έζησε στα χρόνια του βασιλιά Διοκλητιανού (περί το 289 μ.Χ.) και καταγόταν από τη χώρα των Ισαύρων. Ήταν στρατιωτικός στο επάγγελμα, αλλά άφησε τη στρατιωτική ζωή και ζούσε στην έρημο, οπού έκανε πολλά θαύματα. Τον κατάγγειλαν όμως κάποιοι κυνηγοί, που τον είχαν δει, και στάλθηκε στρατιωτικό απόσπασμα για να τον συλλάβει.
