Ο Ιωσήφ έζησε τον 13ο αιώνα μ.Χ.. Έγινε Ιερομόναχος μετά τον θάνατο της συζύγου του και διαδέχτηκε στον Πατριαρχικό θρόνο της Κωνσταντινούπολης τον Γερμανό Γ' το 1268 μ.Χ. Το 1275 μ.Χ. υπέβαλε την παραίτησή του, διότι ο βασιλιάς Μιχαήλ, είχε υπογράψει χωρίς τη θέληση κλήρου και λαού, στη Λυών της Γαλλίας, την ένωση της Ανατολικής και της παπικής Εκκλησίας. Στις 31 Οκτωβρίου 1282 μ.Χ. επανήλθε στον θρόνο και έκανε πολλές και κοπιαστικές περιοδείες για να αποκαταστήσει την Ορθόδοξη εκκλησιαστική τάξη. Όμως, τον Μάρτιο του 1283 μ.Χ., εξουθενωμένος από τους κόπους, παρέδωσε το πνεύμα του στον Θεό.
