Ο Άγιος Στέφανος ο Β' πριν γίνει Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινούπολης, ήταν Μητροπολίτης της Αμάσειας, που ήταν και η πατρίδα του. Διαδέχτηκε στον Πατριαρχικό θρόνο τον Νικόλαο Α' μετά τη δεύτερη Πατριαρχεία του. Η ενθρόνιση του Στεφάνου έγινε το έτος 925 μ.Χ. και πέθανε την 18η Ιουλίου του 928 μ.Χ. σύμφωνα με τον Λέοντα Γραμματικό, ή την 15η του ίδιου μήνα σύμφωνα με τον Κεδρηνό.
