Ο Βασιλιάς Θεοδόσιος Β' βασίλευσε το έτος 408 σε ηλικία μόλις επτά χρονών, διάδοχος του πατέρα του Αρκαδίου. Ονομάστηκε Μικρός για να διακρίνεται από τον παππού του τον Μεγάλο. Του μετέδωσε τη χριστιανική ευσέβεια η αδελφή του Πουλχερία και έτσι έτρεφε μεγάλη ευλάβεια και αφοσίωση στην ορθόδοξη πίστη. Όταν ο Θεοδόσιος ο Μικρός ανέλαβε το βασιλικό σκήπτρο, με τη βοήθεια της αδελφής του Πουλχερίας, υποστήριξε θερμά την αλήθεια της Ορθόδοξης Πίστης και την ασφάλεια του συμβόλου της. Έτσι, με βασιλικό θέσπισμα της 19ής Νοεμβρίου του 430, συνήλθε την 22α Ιουνίου του 431 στην Έφεσο η Γ' Οικουμενική Σύνοδος, που καταδίκασε τις αιρετικές δοξασίες του Νεστορίου. Η Εκκλησία, για τη θερμή ευσέβεια και την σπουδαία αυτή υπηρεσία του Θεοδοσίου Β' προς την Ορθοδοξία, τον κατάταξε στον χορό των Αγίων της.
