Ο Άγιος Απολλώνιος καταγοταν από τις Σάρδεις και καταγγέλθηκε στον έπαρχο Ικονίου, διότι πίστευε στο Χριστό και ενεργούσε μεταξύ των ειδωλολατρών για την εξάπλωση του Ευαγγελίου. Ο Περίνιος -έτσι ονομαζόταν ο έπαρχος- μετά από μάταιες προσπάθειες, για να τον εξαναγκάσει ν' αρνηθεί τον Χριστό, τον σταύρωσε. Το τέλος αυτό, που τη φρικτή αγωνία του δοκίμασε και ο Κύριος μας Ιησούς Χριστός, ο Απολλώνιος υπέστη με πολλή καρτερία, ενδυναμούμενος από τη θεία χάρη. Και έτσι κέρδισε το ενδοξότατο στεφάνι του μαρτυρίου.
