Ο όσιος αυτός καταγόταν από την Καππαδοκία και έζησε στα χρόνια του βασιλιά Κωνσταντίνου του Πορφυρογέννητου (901 - 959 μ.Χ.), γιου του Λέοντα του Φιλοσόφου και της Ζωής. Έκτισε τη Μονή του Βαθέος Ρύακος στη Βιθυνική κωμόπολη Τρίγλια και διακρινόταν όχι μόνο για την ευσέβεια αλλά και για την παιδεία και τον ζήλο να εξυπηρετεί την πίστη και την Εκκλησία. Έτσι, στη Μονή που ίδρυσε, υπήρξε και διδάσκαλος των προσερχόμενων ευσεβών νέων, από τους οποίους πολλοί αναδείχτηκαν στη διδασκαλία του λάου και την άριστη διοίκηση άλλων μοναστηριών.
