Ο Άγιος Μιχαήλ υπήρξε ο τελευταίος μητροπολίτης Αθηνών (1182 - 1204 μ.Χ.) πριν από την φραγκική κατάκτηση. Ο λόγιος μητροπολίτης και αδερφός του ιστορικού Νικήτα Χωνιάτη, λάτρης του ένδοξου παρελθόντος της Αθήνας, ήταν εκείνος που την υπερασπίστηκε όχι μόνο από τους εχθρούς και τις πολιορκίες, αλλά και από την ασυδοσία των κρατικών υπαλλήλων. Οι επιστολές του αποτελούν πλούσια πηγή πληροφοριών για την Αττική του τέλους του 12ου-αρχές του 13ου αιώνα. Στις επιστολές αυτές, διακρίνει κανείς μια επιθετική διάθεση προς την Αθήνα, ωστόσο, με προσεκτικότερη ματιά εύκολα θα διαπιστώσει μια ουσιαστική και βαθιά αγάπη, τόσο στην πόλη όσο και στο λαό της.
