Ὁ Ἅγιος Τρύφων ἦταν εὐλαβὴς καὶ ἐνάρετος μοναχὸς σὲ κάποια μονὴ τοῦ θέματος τοῦ Ὀψικίου καὶ ἐξελέγη Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, στὶς 14 Δεκεμβρίου τοῦ 928 μ.Χ., σὲ διαδοχὴ τοῦ Πατριάρχου Στεφάνου Β’, ὑπὸ τὸ ὅρο νὰ ἀποχωρήσει ἀπὸ τὸν θρόνο μετὰ τὴν ἐνηλικίωση τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ Ρωμανοῦ, Θεοφυλάκτου. Ἀλλὰ ἐπειδὴ ἀρνιόταν νὰ παραιτηθεῖ, ἐξαναγκάσθηκε μὲ πονηρὸ τέχνασμα τοῦ Καισαρείας Θεοφάνους νὰ ὑπογράψει τὴν παραίτησή του ἀπὸ τὸν πατριαρχικὸ θρόνο, τὸν Αὔγουστο τοῦ ἔτους 931 μ.Χ.
