Ὁ Ὅσιος Δανιήλ, κατὰ κόσμον Δημήτριος, γεννήθηκε μεταξὺ τῶν ἐτῶν 1459 – 1460 στὸ Περεγιασλάβλ – Ζελέσκϊυ τῆς Ρωσίας ἀπὸ εὐσεβεῖς καὶ φιλόθεους γονεῖς, τὸν Κωνσταντίνο καὶ τὴν Θεοδοσία, ἡ ὁποία ἀργότερα ἔγινε μοναχὴ μὲ τὸ ὄνομα Θέκλα. Ἀπὸ μικρὴ ἡλικία διδάχθηκε τὰ τῆς μοναχικῆς πολιτείας κοντὰ στὸν ἡγούμενο τῆς μονῆς Νικίτσκϊυ τοῦ Περεγιασλάβλ, Ἰωνᾶ. Ἔγινε μοναχὸς στὴ μονὴ τοῦ Ὁσίου Παφνουτίου (Μπορόβσκι) καὶ τὴν πνευματική του ζωὴ καθοδήγησε ὁ Ἅγιος Λεύκιος τοῦ Βολοκολὰμσκ ποὺ τιμᾶται τὴν ἴδια ἡμέρα (7 Ἀπριλίου).
