Εἶναι ἄγνωστο πότε ἤκμασε ὁ Ὅσιος Ζαχαρίας, ὁ ὁποῖος ἔζησε ἀσκητικὸ ἔγκλειστο βίο. Ὁ Ἅγιος Νικόδημος ὁ Ἁγιορείτης θεωρεῖ ὅτι ὁ Ὅσιος Ζαχαρίας εἶναι ὁ πνευματικὸς υἱὸς τοῦ Ὁσίου Καρίωνος († 24 Νοεμβρίου), περὶ τοῦ ὁποίου γίνεται λόγος στὸ Γεροντικόν, ἀλλὰ ὁ προσδιορισμὸς «ὁ ἐν Χαρσικίῳ» ἀποκλείει τὸν Ἐρημίτη τῆς Αἰγύπτου Ζαχαρία. Ἴσως τὸ Χαρσίκιον πρέπει νὰ ταυτίζεται μὲ τὴν μονὴ «τὴν ἐν Χαρσιανῷ», στὴν Καππαδοκία, τὴν ὁποία ἔκτισε ὁ Ὅσιος Νικηφόρος († 23 Ὀκτωβρίου).
