Ὁ Ὅσιος Ἰσαάκιος (Τοροπτσάνιν) γεννήθηκε στὴ Ρωσία ἀπὸ πλούσιους καὶ ἐπιφανεῖς γονεῖς. Ἡ κύρια ἐνασχόλησή του ἦταν τὸ ἐμπόριο. Κάποτε ὅμως ἡ ἀγαθὴ διάνοιά του σκέφθηκε ὅτι ὅλα τὰ ἀνθρώπινα εἶναι μάταια. Μοίρασε τότε ὅλη τὴν περιουσία του στοὺς πτωχοὺς καὶ ᾖλθε στὸ σπήλαιο τοῦ Ὁσίου Ἀντωνίου († 10 Ἰουλίου), στὴ Λαύρα τοῦ Κιέβου, ποθώντας νὰ ἀφιερωθεῖ στὸν Κύριο. Ἐκεῖ ἐκάρη μοναχὸς καὶ ἄρχισε τὸν σκληρό του πνευματικὸ ἀγῶνα. Μὲ τὴν εὐλογία τοῦ Ὁσίου Ἀντωνίου κλείσθηκε στὸ βάθος τῶν Σπηλαίων, στὸ πιὸ σκοτεινὸ κελί.
