Ὁ Προφήτης Ἰωὴλ εἶναι ἕνας ἀπὸ τοὺς Δώδεκα Προφῆτες τῆς Παλαιᾶς Διαθήκης. Τὸ ὄνομα Ἰωὴλ προῆλθε ἀπὸ τὴν σύντμηση τοῦ Γιχβὲλ (=ὁ Γιεχωβᾶ εἶναι Θεός). Ἦταν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ Βαθουήλ. Ἀπὸ τὴν συχνὴ καὶ ἀποκλειστικὴ ἀναφορά του στὸν Ἰούδα καὶ τὴν Ἱερουσαλήμ, τὴ Σιῶν καὶ τὸ ναό, φαίνεται ὅτι προφήτευσε στὴν Ἰουδαία καὶ μάλιστα στὴν Ἱερουσαλήμ. Ὁρισμένοι ἐρευνητὲς ἀναβιβάζουν χρονικὰ τὸν Προφήτη Ἰωὴλ σὲ πολὺ παλιὰ ἐποχή, πρὶς ἀπὸ τὸν Προφήτη Ἀμὼς καὶ τὸν προφήτη Ἠσαΐα, κατὰ τὰ πρῶτα ἔτη τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Ἰωὰς (836 – 797 π.Χ.), ἐνῷ ἄλλοι τάσσουν τὸ βιβλίο του μετὰ τὴ βαβυλώνιο αἰχμαλωσία (500 – 400 π.Χ.).
