Ὁ Ὅσιος Ἀμμωνᾶς ἔζησε κατὰ τοὺς χρόνους τοῦ Μεγάλου Ἀντωνίου, τὸν 4ο αἰώνα μ.Χ., ὁ ὁποῖος ἔτρεφε πρὸς αὐτὸν μεγάλη ἀγάπη καὶ ὑπόληψη καὶ ὑπῆρξε διάδοχός του στὴ πνευματικὴ καθοδήγηση τῶν μοναχῶν τοῦ μοναστικοῦ κέντρου Πισπίρ, ποὺ βρισκόταν στὴν ἀριστερὴ ὄχθη τοῦ Νείλου. Σπάνια ἄνθρωπος ἔγινε τόσο κύριος τοῦ ἐαυτοῦ του, ὥστε νὰ εἶναι ἀνώτερος ἀπὸ ὕβρεις, εὐλογώντας καὶ εὐεργετώντας τοὺς ὑβριστές του. Ἰδιαίτερο δὲ πνευματικὸ ἀγώνα κατέβαλε ὁ Ἅγιος γιὰ τὸν φωτισμὸ καὶ τὴν ἐπιστροφὴ στὴν ἀρετὴ δυστυχῶν γυναικῶν, ποὺ εἶχαν ἀκολουθήσει τὸν δρόμο τῆς ἁμαρτίας. Καὶ ἐνῶ ὁ κόσμος τὸν κακολογοῦσε, αὐτὸς συμβούλευε, παρακαλοῦσε καὶ προσευχόταν. Ἔτσι πολλὲς ἀπὸ αὐτὲς ἦλθαν σὲ μετάνοια καὶ ἔζησαν μὲ εὐσέβεια καὶ σωφροσύνη.
