Ὁ Ἅγιος Μάξιμος γεννήθηκε στὴν Σερβία καὶ ἦταν υἱὸς τοῦ ἡγεμόνα τῶν Σέρβων Ἁγίου Στεφάνου Βράνκοβιτς τοῦ Τυφλοῦ († 10 Δεκεμβρίου) καὶ τῆς Ἁγίας Ἀγγελίνας († 30 Ἰουλίου). Τὸ κοσμικό του ὄνομα ἦταν Γεώργιος. Ὁ νεαρὸς πρίγκιπας ἐγκατέλειψε τὴν κοσμικὴ δόξα καὶ ἔγινε μοναχὸς στὴ Μονὴ Μανάσσια τῆς κεντρικῆς Σερβίας. Λόγω τῶν ἐπιδρομῶν τῶν Τούρκων, κατέφυγε στὴ Ρουμανία, ὅπου καὶ χειροτονήθηκε Ἐπίσκοπος Οὐγγροβλαχίας. Ὅταν ἔφθασε σὲ βαθὺ γῆρας ἀποσύρθηκε στὴ Μονὴ Κρούσεντολ τῆς Σερβίας καὶ κοιμήθηκε, μετὰ ἀπὸ πολυχρόνια ἀσθένεια, τὸ ἔτος 1546.
