Ο Άγιος Ειρηναίος, έζησε στα χρόνια του βασιλιά Μάρκου Αυρηλίου (160 μ.Χ.). (Πιθανόν να γεννήθηκε στη Σμύρνη, περί το 140 μ.Χ., διότι σε κάποιο από τα συγγράμματα του, Έλεγχος 3,3 λέει, ότι παιδί ακόμα γνώρισε τον επίσκοπο Σμύρνης Πολύκαρπο (βλέπε 23 Φεβρουαρίου). Ποιου δάσκαλου όμως μαθητής υπήρξε και πώς μπήκε στον ιερό κλήρο δεν γνωρίζουμε). Ήταν διάδοχος των αγίων αποστόλων και έκανε επίσκοπος της πόλης Λουγδούνου (σημερινής Λυών) της Γαλλίας (μετά τον μαρτυρικό θάνατο του προκατόχου του Ποθεινού). Αυτός όπως λένε, συνέγραψε πολλά συγγράμματα κυρίως δογματικά. Και μ' αυτά στήριξε πολλούς χριστιανούς στην ορθή πίστη, και τους γλίτωσε από τις πλάνες των διαφόρων αιρέσεων. Τέλος, αποκεφαλίστηκε και αυτός από τον βασιλιά Σεβήρο, το έτος 202 μ.Χ., παίρνοντας έτσι το αμάραντο στεφάνι του μαρτυρίου.
