Ὁ Ἅγιος Μάρτυς Ἀσκλᾶς καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὴ Θηβαΐδα τῆς Αἰγύπτου καὶ εἶναι ἄγνωστο πότε ἄθλησε. Ἐργαζόμενος ἱεραποστολικὰ ὑπέρ τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου πίστεως, συνελήφθη καὶ ὁδηγήθηκε ἐνώπιον τοῦ ἄρχοντος Ἀρριανοῦ. Παρ’ ὅλο ποὺ πιέσθηκε, γιὰ νὰ θυσιάσει στὰ εἴδωλα, ἀρνήθηκε καὶ ἐξ’ αἰτίας αὐτοῦ ὑποβλήθηκε σὲ πλῆθος μαρτυρίων, τὰ ὁποῖα ὑπέμεινε ἀγόγγυστα. Τοῦ καταξέσκισαν τὶς σάρκες καὶ τὸν ἔκαψαν μὲ ἀναμμένες λαμπάδες. Ἐμμένοντας ὁ Ἅγιος παρὰ ταῦτα στὴν ὁμολογία του, ἀφοῦ τοῦ ἔδεσαν στὸ λαιμὸ βαρύτατο λίθο, τὸν ἔριξαν στὸν ποταμὸ Νεῖλο, ὅπου βρῆκε μαρτυρικὸ θάνατο, ἐπὶ αὐτοκράτορος Διοκλητιανοῦ (284 – 305 μ.Χ.).
