Ὁ Ἅγιος Μάρτυς Σάββας ἔζησε κατὰ τοὺς χρόνους τοῦ αὐτοκράτορος Αὐρηλιανοῦ (270 – 275 μ.Χ.). Ἦταν στρατηλάτης στὴ Ρώμη καὶ καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὸ γένος τῶν Γότθων. Διέλαμπε γιὰ τὴν καθαρότητα τοῦ βίου του καὶ τὴν ἄσκησή του, ἐπισκεπτόταν δὲ στὶς φυλακὲς τοὺς Χριστιανοὺς γιὰ νὰ τοὺς παρηγορήσει. Γι’ αὐτὸ κατηγορήθηκε στὸν βασιλέα καὶ ὁδηγήθηκε δέσμιος ἐνώπιόν του, ὅπου ὁμολόγησε μὲ παρρησία καὶ πνευματικὴ ἀνδρεία τὴν πίστη του στὸν Χριστό. Τότε τὸν κρέμασαν καὶ τοῦ κατέσκισαν τὶς σάρκες. Ὅμως ἡ Χάρη τοῦ Θεοῦ τὸν διατήρησε σῶο καὶ ἀβλαβή. Βλέποντας τὸ παράδοξο θαῦμα ποὺ ἐπιτέλεσε ἡ δύναμη τοῦ Θεοῦ, πίστεψαν στὸν Χριστὸ ἑβδομήντα στρατιῶτες, οἱ ὁποῖοι καὶ ἀποκεφαλίσθηκαν.
