Οι Άγιοι Ιάκωβος ο Πρεσβύτερος και Αζάς ο Διάκονος έζησαν επί του χριστιανομάχου βασιλιά των Περσών, Σαπώρ του Β'. Ο πρεσβύτερος Ιάκωβος ήταν από το χωριό Φαραθά, και ο διάκονος Αζάς από το χωριό Βιθυκορά. Καταγγέλθηκαν (332 μ.Χ.) σαν χριστιανοί και ανακρίθηκαν μπροστά στον άρχιμάγο Αχοσχαργάν (ή Αρχωγαϊχάρ). Επειδή όμως παρέμειναν στην ομολογία του Χριστού, στην αρχή τους κτύπησαν σκληρά και κατόπιν τους άφησαν γυμνούς τη νύκτα, μέσα σε δριμύ και αφόρητο ψύχος. Το πρωΐ, που μόλις άνέπνεαν, αλλά η ζωή της πίστης διατηρούσε όλο το σφρίγος και την ακμή της στις ψυχές τους, τους ρώτησαν: «Απαρνείστε επί τέλους τον Ιησού»; «Να πεθάνουμε θέλουμε γι' Αυτόν», απάντησαν οι μάρτυρες. Τότε ο άρχοντας, διέταξε και τους αποκεφάλισαν.
