Ο Άγιος Παυσίλυπος έζησε στα χρόνια του βασιλιά Αδριανού (117-138 μ.Χ.) και ήταν ευγενής και πλούσιος στην πόλη της Ρώμης. Επειδή όμως ενθάρρυνε και υποστήριζε τους χριστιανούς που βάδιζαν για το μαρτύριο, συνελήφθη και οδηγήθηκε στο βασιλιά. Αυτός τον ρώτησε αν πιστεύει στον Χριστό και ο Παυσίλυπος απάντησε ότι όχι μόνο πιστεύει αλλά είναι έτοιμος και το αίμα του να χύσει γι' αυτόν. Τότε τον χτύπησαν τόσο πολύ στην κοιλιά, που φάνηκαν τα έντερα του. Έπειτα τον παραχώρησαν στον έπαρχο Πράκτο, που και αυτός τον βασάνισε φρικτά. Αλλά επειδή ο Άγιος επέμενε στην πίστη του, καταδικάστηκε σε αποκεφαλισμό. Τελικά όμως, αφού έσπασε την αλυσίδα πού του είχαν βάλει, δραπέτευσε και ζώντας με αρετή παρέδωσε την ψυχή του στον Θεό.
