Ο Άγιος Ναθαναήλ (Σίμων ο Ζηλωτής ή Βαρθολομαίος - υιός του Θολομαίου) καταγόταν από την Κανά της Γαλιλαίας όπου ο Κύριος πραγματοποίησε το πρώτο του θαύμα. Ήταν στενός φίλος του Αποστόλου Φιλίππου, ο οποίος και του ανήγγειλε την υλοποίηση της προφητείας στο Πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού. Στη συνέχεια έγινε ένας εκ των 12 Αποστόλων για τον οποίο ο Κύριος έπλεξε το εγκώμιο λέγοντας:« Ιδε αληθής Ισραηλίτης, εν ω δόλη ουκ έστιν». Η αποστολική δράση του Απόστολου Ναθαναήλ επεκτείνεται μέχρι την Αφρική, τη Μαυριτανία και τη Βρετανία, όπου και σταυρώθηκε από ειδωλολάτρες.
