Ο Άγιος Μαξιμιανός έζησε στα χρόνια του βασιλιά Θεοδοσίου Β' του μικρού (408 - 450 μ.Χ.) και καταγόταν από τη παλιά Ρώμη, από την οποία ήλθε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Εκεί έλαμψε με την αρετή του και την αυστηρότητα της ζωής του, καθώς μάλιστα ήταν ευφυής και πολυμαθής, χειροτονήθηκε από τον Πατριάρχη Σισίνιο (426 - 427 μ.Χ.) Πρεσβύτερος. Όταν πέθανε ο Σισίνιος, τον διαδέχτηκε ο αιρετικός Νεστόριος (428 - 431 μ.Χ.) του οποίου, κατά των αιρετικών δοξασιών αντέδρασε έντονα ο Άγιος Μαξιμιανός. Αφού τελικά εξορίστηκε ο Νεστόριος, στο θρόνο ανήλθε ο Άγιος Μαξιμιανός με την ψήφο βασιλιά και λάου στις 25 Οκτωβρίου 431 μ.Χ. Επί της Πατριαρχίας του στην Εκκλησία επικράτησε ειρήνη, χωρίς σκάνδαλα και αιρετικές ταραχές. Έτσι λοιπόν καλά αφού ποίμανε το ποίμνιο του για δύο χρόνια και πέντε μήνες, απεβίωσε ειρηνικά στις 12 Απριλίου 434 μ.Χ. Η Σύναξή του τελείται στους Αγίους Αποστόλους.
