Καταγόταν από την Άδριανούπολη της Αν. Θράκης και κατά κόσμον ονομαζόταν Χριστόδουλος. Όταν ήταν νέος με δόλιο τρόπο εξισλαμίοηκε από ένα εξωμότη Αρμένιο. Συναισθάνθηκε όμως το σφάλμα του, μετανόησε και εξομολογήθηκε. Σέ ηλικία 19 χρονών ήλθε στη Μονή Διονυσίου, όπου για τέσσερα χρόνια έζησε με υποταγή και κατάνυξη. Με την ευλογία του γέροντα του, επέστρεψε στην Άδριανούπολη, όπου μπροστά στον κριτή αποκήρυξε τον Μωαμεθανισμό και ομολόγησε με θάρρος τη Χριστιανική του πίστη. Έτσι στις 16 Απριλίου 1818, ήμερα Τρίτη Διακαινησίμου και ώρα 8.00' αποκεφαλίστηκε ψάλλοντας το "Χριστός Ανέστη".
