Οι γραμματικές γνώσεις του Οσίου ήταν μέτριες. Διακρίθηκε όμως, για την πολύ ενάρετη ζωή του. Η εξωτερική του εμφάνιση ήταν μάλλον άσχημη. Και όμως, ενώ ο ίδιος ντυνόταν με παλιά φορέματα, τα φιλάνθρωπο έργα του ήταν πλούσια και αμέτρητα. Το κελί του έμενε πάντοτε ανοικτό για τους φτωχούς και τους ξένους, εφοδιαζόμενος δε με σιτάρι και λάδι, μοίραζε σ' όσους απ' αυτούς είχαν ανάγκη. Όταν κάποτε πληροφορήθηκε ότι ο άρχοντας της κωμοπόλεώς τους καταπίεζε τους γεωργούς, δεν δίστασε να παρουσιασθεί μπροστά στον υπερήφανο και λαμπροφορεμένο εκείνο εγωιστή με τα φτωχικά του ρούχα, και να του δώσει μαθήματα δικαιοσύνης και ευγενείας. Έτσι με τέτοιες άγιες ασχολίες τελείωσε τη θεοφιλή ζωή του. (Η μνήμη του επαναλαμβάνεται και στις 13 Φεβρουαρίου σαν Όσιος Μαϋουμάς ή Μαϊουμάς).
