Ο Όσιος Ηλιού υπήρξε ένας από τους μεγάλους διδασκάλους και καθηγητές της ερήμου. Είδε την πείνα, και δεν την λογάριασε. Τα ψύχη, και τα αψήφησε. Την αγρυπνία, και την καταφρόνησε. Τους τυράννους και τους αντέβλεψε . Μυρίους κατατρεγμούς, και τους κατήσχυνε. Τι φοβόταν μόνο; Τρία πράγματα, ως έλεγε: την ώρα, κατά την οποία έμελλε η ψυχή του να εξέλθει από το σώμα του, τον καιρό κατά τον οποίο έμελλε να φανεί ενώπιον του Θεού και την στιγμή κατά την οποία θα εξερχόταν η περί αυτού απόφαση του Δικαιοκρίτου και Φιλανθρώπου Θεού. Ο Όσιος Ηλιού ο Θαυματουργός κοιμήθηκε με ειρήνη.
