Ο νεομάρτυρας αυτός δεν αναφέρεται από τους Συναξαριστές. Για πρώτη φορά γίνεται λόγος για τον νεομάρτυρα αυτόν από τον Χρυσόστομο Παπαδόπουλο. Δυστυχώς ο ιστορικός αυτός δεν αναφέρει την πηγή, που πήρε την πληροφορία αυτή. Αναφέρει σχετικά: «Κατὰ τὸ αὐτὸ ἔτος μαρτυρικῶς ἐτελειώθη ὁ Νικόλαος ὁ Μυτιληναῖος, τὴν δὲ 16 Ἰανουαρίου 1771 ὁ Ἱερομάρτυς Δαμασκηνὸς (βλέπε 16 Ιανουαρίου), ἁγιορείτης μοναχός...». Έτσι ο αντιθετικός σύνδεσμος «δέ», ενισχύει την άποψη ότι την ημερομηνία του μαρτυρίου του αγίου αυτού πρέπει να αναζητήσουμε σε άλλη εκτός της 16ης Ιανουαρίου. Με την επιφύλαξη αυτή και επειδή αρκέτες σύχρονες πηγές αναφέρουν σαν ημέρα του μαρτυρίου την 16η Ιανουαρίου, καταχωρούμε τον νεομάρτυρα Νικόλαο, την ημέρα αυτή.
