Ο Όσιος Πέτρος γεννήθηκε στην Καισάρεια της Καππαδοκίας το 349 μ.Χ. και ήταν αδελφός του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου και του Γρηγορίου Νύσσης. Καθοδηγήθηκε από την αδελφή του Μακρινά στην αυστηρή ασκητική ζωή και έγινε μοναχός και ηγούμενος του Κοινοβίου που ίδρυσε ο Μέγας Βασίλειος, ο οποίος το 370 μ.Χ. τον χειροτόνησε πρεσβύτερο και το 380 μ.Χ. επίσκοπο Σεβαστείας στη Μ. Αρμενία. Έλαβε μέρος στη Β' Οικουμενική Σύνοδο (Κωνσταντινούπολη 381 μ.Χ.). Απεβίωσε ειρηνικά το έτος 392 μ.Χ.
