Ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, αφού πέρασε τη ζωή του όσια και ασκητικά, χειροτονήθηκε στο 68ο έτος της ζωής του επίσκοπος Γορτύνης στην Κρήτη. Αφού κυβέρνησε το ποίμνιο του 25 χρόνια, παρουσιάστηκε στον ηγεμόνα Αγριανό το έτος 299, στα χρόνια των Βασιλέων Διοκλητιανού και Μαξιμιανού, και επειδή με θάρρος κήρυξε τον Χριστό, ρίχτηκε μέσα στη φωτιά. Άλλα ενώ τα δεσμά κάηκαν και τα ξύλα όλα της φωτιάς έγιναν στάχτη, ο Άγιος έμεινε εντελώς αβλαβής. Τότε αφέθηκε ελεύθερος. Αργότερα όμως, επειδή επέστρεφε στην πίστη του Χριστού πολλούς ειδωλολάτρες, καταδικάστηκε σε θάνατο. Τότε του έβαλαν χαλινάρι στο στόμα και τον φόρτωσαν επάνω σε άμαξα, επειδή ήταν 93 χρονών και δεν μπορούσε να βαδίσει. Όταν έφτασαν σε μια τοποθεσία που ονομαζόταν Ράξο, τα βόδια σταμάτησαν μόνα τους και εκεί ο άξιος Ιεράρχης και αθλητής του Κυρίου, έλαβε το στεφάνι του μαρτυρίου με αποκεφαλισμό.
