Ο Άγιος Λυκαρίων καταγόταν από την Ερμούπολη της Αιγύπτου. Συνελήφθη επειδή ομολογούσε τον Χριστό και φυλακίστηκε μέσα σε μια βρωμερή φυλακή. Μετά από μερικές ημέρες τον έβγαλαν, τον ξέσχισαν με σίδερα και κατόπιν τον κάρφωσαν επάνω σε σταυρό. Έπειτα έκαψαν το σώμα του με πυρωμένα σιδερένια ραβδιά και στη συνέχεια τον έριξαν μέσα σε αναμμένο καμίνι, όπου ο Άγιος παρέμεινε για τρεις ήμερες και βγήκε με τη χάρη του Θεού αβλαβής. Κατόπιν του έδωσαν δηλητήρια, από τα οποία και πάλι ο Άγιος έμεινε αβλαβής, με αποτέλεσμα να πιστέψει στο Χριστό ο ειδωλολάτρης που τα κατασκεύαζε και ο όποιος αποκεφαλίστηκε. Μετά από αυτά, έκοψαν τα νεύρα του Μάρτυρα και τον έριξαν μέσα σε ένα καζάνι βραστό νερό. Στη συνέχεια έγδαραν το κεφάλι του και τελικά τον αποκεφάλισαν, παίρνοντας έτσι το αμάραντο στεφάνι του μαρτυρίου.
