Ο Άγιος Σωφρόνιος, κατά κόσμον Στέφανος, καταγόταν από την Βουλγαρία και έζησε τον 15ο και 16ο αιώνα μ.Χ. Ήταν πρεσβύτερος της εκκλησιαστικής κοινότητος Πενκιόβσι, κοντά στην Σόφια, και λόγω των επιδρομών των Τούρκων κατέφυγε στη Βαλαχία, κοντά στο βοεβόδα Ραντούλ. Στη συνέχεια ασκήτεψε θεοφιλώς σε μονή της περιοχής Ρουσκούκ, ίσως σε αυτή που ίδρυσε ο Πατριάρχης Τυρνόβου Άγιος Ιωακείμ (τιμάται 18 Ιανουαρίου), και διακρίθηκε για τη φιλανθρωπία και την ελεημοσύνη του.
