Ο Όσιος Σεραφείμ (το κοσμικό του όνομα ήταν Σωτήρης) γεννήθηκε στο χωριό Ζέλι της Βοιωτίας, από ευσεβείς και ενάρετους γονείς, οι οποίοι τον γαλούχησαν με τα νάματα του Ευαγγελίου γι' αυτό και από μικρός ο όσιος, είχε μια κλίση στη μελέτη των Αγίων Γραφών και την ασκητική ζωή. Σε νεαρή ηλικία και παρά την πρόσκαιρη άρνηση των γονέων του, μετέβη στο Μονύδριο του Προφήτη Ηλία, στο όρος Κάρκαρα, όπου έκτισε ναό στο όνομα του Σωτήρος Χριστού και ασκήτευε εκεί.
