Ο όσιος αυτός έζησε κατά τον 11ο αιώνα μ.Χ. ως ησυχαστής στα ερημικότερα μέρη του Άθω. Διακρίθηκε μεταξύ των ασκητικότερων ανδρών του Αγίου Όρους και ασχολήθηκε με πολύ ζήλο στα ζητήματα της άκρας εγρήγορσης του νου, της υπερκόσμιας ύψωσης της ψυχής και της μεταρσίου και απερίσπαστου προσευχής. Τις κατάλληλες μεθόδους γι' αυτό το τελευταίο, συμπεριέλαβε στο έργο του περί νοεράς προσευχής (Φιλοκαλία).
