Η εορτή αυτή καθιερώθηκε μετά τη φανέρωση του Αγίου Ιωάννου, Αρχιεπισκόπου Νόβγκοροντ (κοιμήθηκε 7 Σεπτεμβρίου 1186 μ.Χ.) στον Άγιο Ευθύμιο, Αρχιεπίσκοπο Νόβγκοροντ (κοιμήθηκε 11 Μαρτίου 1458 μ.Χ.), ο οποίος του είπε να εορτάζει με αγρυπνία στον καθεδρικό ναό της Αγίας Σοφίας τους μακαρίους Ιεράρχες της τοπικής αυτής Εκκλησίας, που ευαρέστησαν με το βίο και τους αγώνες τους τον Θεό. Επίσης, η εορτή αυτή επιτελείται στις 4 Οκτωβρίου, ημέρα της μνήμης του Αγίου Ιεροθέου, Επισκόπου Αθηνών, σύμφωνα με όσα είπε ο Άγιος Ιωάννης, και την Τρίτη Κυριακή μετά την Πεντηκοστή.
